Of the passage “I hear of your evil dealings from all this people” (Sam. I, 2:23), Rabbi Avahu said: “The Scriptures intend to teach the people ethical behavior. When one hears good things of his neighbor, he should repeat it in the name of the person that he had heard it from; but when one hears evil of his neighbor and he wishes to admonish him, he should not name the person by whom he was informed.³⁵⁾מדרש שמואל פּרשה ז׳.
